How to Check for Mold

Mold requires moisture in order for it to take roots and grow. With that, you can begin to guess that mold is most often found in areas that are damp and humid. Leaks from pipes or under your sink, for example, often are root causes for mold growth and should be attended to immediately. If you visibly see mold anywhere in your home, that needs to be removed by following safe mold removal methods. But, what about mold that grows in areas that can’t be seen? For example, a musty smell unaccompanied by visible signs of mold (black, white, or brownish in color) are likely indicators that you have mold growing in a hidden area.

The following are some of the most common areas for mold to grow undetected and, therefore, smart for home owners to look and test for mold:

  • Behind your fridge
  • Underneath stacks of newspapers or cardboard
  • Behind the drywall in wall stud spaces that contain plumbing lines
  • Under sinks
  • Under the wallboard around leaking windows
  • In ventilation ducts
  • Under carpeting that was wet at one time (flooding, carpet cleaning)
  • Backside of acoustic ceiling tiles (if roof leaked)
  • Behind any drywall that has been subjected to flooding
